DIY Chinese Lanterns

Chinese lanterns are displayed in the homes during the Lunar Chinese New Year.  Lanterns represent the presence of light during the first full moon of the new year.  If you would like to create your own lanterns to decorate the home, I found a really simple and lovely idea from TheCreativePlace.blogspot.com.  All you need are Red Packets, glue, brad, ruler and a scissor.  Cut the red packets into small strips, each strip about 1/2 inch wide.  Gather about 10 strips, and punch holes at both ends.  Then push a brad through each end. Twist out each strip individually to begin unfolding the lantern.

Voila…pretty paper lanterns.

The Creative Place used holiday paper to make them.  You can also use Chinese New Year greeting cards instead of the Red Packets to make these lanterns.

While the spouse was busy looking up the karaoke machines for our party which will be held in a week’s time, I was checking out some party decorating ideas online. I found another great idea from Martha Stewart.  I can put some flowers in a small drinking glass and then use a Chinese paper lantern to cover the glass.   This is a lovely Asian-inspired theme.

I also like the idea of using floating candles to lit up the dinner table.

Great ideas huh?  If you are looking for some inspiration, do check out Martha Stewart.

Recently, I have developed a love for d-i-y things.  I love all those great ideas on how we can decorate our homes with things that we can do ourselves.  After going through my favourite craft blog – Martha Stewart, I found another easy craft idea. You can brighten up the room with a simple floral arrangement.  Then use a colourful paper lantern as the sleeve for the vase.  Pretty cool huh?

This decor is just perfect for the coming Chinese New Year celebration.

Garlands are no longer just for weddings and birthday parties.  They are popping up all over the place now.   Garlands can be made out of paper, felt, fabric or more.   While looking for cigar deals online as a birthday gift for a friend, I came across some really nice handmade garlands at 3 Girls And A Goat via Etsy.  Garlands are great for transforming any space into something spectacular.  I cannot wait to make some for my home.

Mirrors are great for adding a statement  to your wall.  It is a very simple decor but it has a great impact on the appearance of your home.  Round mirrors are great to create a warm and softer look.  If you are more towards a modern and contemporary style, then you may want to accent your wall with this mesh wall mirror from Opulent Items.  You can never go wrong with mirrors with using mirrors as accent or as a focal piece in your home.

Eventhough there is still in the ground, I have been dreaming about what I want to plant in my garden this Spring.  It won’t be long before Spring arrives.  Spring  is the time for gardening.  Are you ready to start planning your garden?  Looking forward to planting bulbs to colour your garden?  This year, I may get some flowering trees such as the crape myrtle trees. I am also looking for garden accents to make my garden more beautiful. Perhaps a fountain for the Orient look.   I just cannot wait to start my gardening project.

When I was staying in a 600 sq. ft. apartment, space was very limited.  I also had a hard time finding a drying space for my clothes.  I do not fancy using the dryer and prefer to lay or hang them up to dry.  Due to space constraint, I could only use a simple drying rack which could only hold about 6 hangers and 2 pieces of clothing flat on the rack.   If you are looking for a good drying rack for your indoor or outdoor use, do check out this Free Standing Drying Rack from Organize.com.  This cleverly designed drying rack has enough space for 2 machine loads.  It also features adjustable levels to accommodate short and long items.   It can even fit inside a shower.

While helping a friend to look for the auto insurance companies online, I chanced upon some really cool decorating ideas using old or vintage suitcases.   They can be used as a coffee table or stack a few of them together to form a side table.  Vintage suitcases are a cool way to add personality to your home.  If you have any old suitcases that you do not need anymore, don’t throw them away.  Use them creatively around your home.  If not, start visiting your local flea markets and keep a lookout for mismatched luggage.
